About The K Girls
Kayla Biagiotti is a wonderful young woman. Born with mitochondrial disease, Kayla surpassed doctors’ expectations that she may not live very long; what doctors didn’t account for was Kayla’s amazing spirit.
In 2001, Kayla spent six months at Boston Children’s Hospital. In order to make a negative experience positive, her parents Kris and Bob, decided to enroll her in the Miles for Miracles patient partner program, which pairs children being treated at the Hospital with runners who complete the Boston Marathon in the child’s honor. Kayla’s first year with the program became another negative experience when her runner tragically lost his 19-year-old son.
After the 2002 Marathon season ended, Kris met Jane Melchionda, who welcomed her to the Credit Unions Kids at Heart team. Kris, Kayla, and Bob became integral parts of the team, cheering on Kayla’s runners from the firehouse in Boston each Patriots Day.
In 2005, three years after joining the team, Kris laced up her running sneakers and completed the Boston Marathon in honor of her daughter for the first time. Later that year, Kayla’s dad passed suddenly of a heart attack.
Almost every year since, Kris has hit the pavement, braved Heartbreak Hill, and completed one of the world’s most daunting marathon courses. Together, Kris and Kayla have faced insurmountable challenges. In 2013, they will face a new challenge—they will attempt to be the first mother/daughter team to complete the Boston Marathon together. This achievement will be a historic first, and for two amazing women who have come through so much together, there is no doubt that they will rise to the challenge.
Kris and Kayla inspire others every day, whether it be through their toughness and dedication, or through public speaking engagements. To learn more about their incredible journey, click here to read "What Does Being a Patient Partner for Boston Children’s Hospital Mean?"
The K Girls are on their way to making history. On September 30, they completed the Smuttynose Rockfest Marathon to qualify for Boston.
